ShowerGuard & Shower Glass Protection in New Jersey
Hard water in New Jersey leaves white spots and scale on shower glass, and soap scum gives mildew a place to grow. Protected glass keeps water and minerals from bonding to the surface, so the glass stays clear and cleans with a quick squeegee. We offer ShowerGuard factory-sealed glass on new doors and a professional protective coating for new or existing glass.
Your protection options
- ShowerGuard: permanently sealed at the glass factory, lifetime warranty on the coating
- Professional protective coating: applied in our shop or on site to new or existing glass
- Available on frameless doors, enclosures, steam showers, tub doors and fixed panels
- Works on clear and low-iron (ultra-clear) glass
- Coating restoration for older glass that has etched or clouded

Why shower glass gets cloudy
Glass looks smooth, but under a microscope its surface is full of tiny peaks and valleys. Hard water fills those valleys with calcium and magnesium. Soap scum and body oils stick on top, and that film holds moisture that mildew feeds on. Over time the minerals etch into the glass, and no amount of scrubbing makes it clear again.
A protective treatment seals that surface so water beads up and runs off, taking minerals and soap with it. Cleaning goes from scrubbing with harsh chemicals to a quick squeegee and a weekly wipe with a mild cleaner.
ShowerGuard vs. applied coating
| ShowerGuard | Applied coating | |
|---|---|---|
| How it's made | Sealed into the glass surface at the factory with an ion-beam process | A liquid treatment bonded to the glass by our team |
| Lifespan | Permanent. It won't wear off or need reapplying | About 10 years, then can be reapplied |
| Existing glass? | No, new glass only. Order it with your door | Yes, new or existing glass |
| Average NJ price | About $10–$15 per sq ft | About $5–$9 per sq ft |
| Best for | New showers you want to stay like new for good | Existing glass, rentals and tighter budgets |
How to figure the cost
Multiply the width by the height of each glass panel in inches, divide by 144 to get square feet, and add the panels together. A standard 60" wide by 78" tall door and panel is 60 × 78 ÷ 144 = about 32.5 sq ft of glass. With ShowerGuard at about $12 per sq ft, that's about $390 added to the job. With an applied coating at about $7 per sq ft, it's about $230. We include the exact number in your written quote.
Caring for protected glass
- Squeegee or wipe the glass after showers.
- Clean weekly with a mild, non-abrasive cleaner or a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water.
- Don't use scouring powders, steel wool or razor blades on the glass.
- Keep cleaners off the hinges and caulk, and rinse well.

Questions
ShowerGuard & Glass Protection FAQ
Is ShowerGuard worth it?
For most new frameless showers, yes. It costs about $10–$15 per square foot, typically $350–$450 on a standard door and panel, and it keeps the glass from etching and clouding for the life of the shower. In hard-water areas of New Jersey, unprotected glass can start looking cloudy within a year or two.
Can ShowerGuard be added to my existing shower glass?
No. ShowerGuard is applied at the glass factory, so it has to be ordered with new glass. For existing glass, we apply a professional protective coating instead.
Does protected glass prevent mildew?
It greatly reduces it. Mildew needs soap scum and moisture to grow on. Protected glass sheds water and soap, so there's much less for mildew to grow on, especially if you squeegee after showers.
How much does a shower glass coating cost in NJ?
An applied protective coating averages about $5–$9 per square foot of glass in New Jersey, or roughly $200–$300 for a standard door and panel. ShowerGuard averages about $10–$15 per square foot.
Do I still need to clean protected glass?
Yes, but it's much easier. A quick squeegee after showers and a weekly wipe with a mild cleaner keeps it clear. You won't need harsh scrubbing.
